Volunteering at AWH

Schools will be starting just around the corner, and many Middle Schools, High Schools and even colleges, require Community Service Hours to graduate or to pass certain classes. If you need to do some community service hours, consider completing them at AHEAD With Horses!

AWH always needs volunteers!!! We take people that have never seen a live horse before to those that have been riding their whole life.

We normally have volunteers help us with our lessons by spotting (walking alongside the horse and helping the instructor and child) and leading horses. Other activities include: grooming, cleaning tack, maintaining the facility (raking leaves, weeding, picking up rocks, cleaning the barn walls, etc), helping with mailings when needed, etc.

If you are interested in helping with the children and horses, we have a quick orientation that is held every Saturday (except before major holidays when we are closed or rain) at 8:45 am sharp at our facility at 10157 Johanna Ave, Shadow Hills, CA, 91040. You do not need to sign up for the orientation, simply be here on time. We do teach lessons on Saturdays, which begin at 9:00 am. If you would like, you are more than welcome to stay and volunteer that day (till around 2:00-2:30 pm).

Once you have come to one orientation, you do not need to attend it again. We do have volunteer opportunities at our mobile program site in Brentwood on Thursdays and during the week in the afternoons in Shadow Hills. More information about those days and times will be given at the orientation.

If you are between 12 and 18, please bring a parent or guardian with you to sign some paperwork. Or have your parent/guardian fill out the form below and bring it with you. We do not take any volunteers that are under age 12.

Our dress code includes the following:

  • Closed toe shoes with socks
  • Long pants (no shorts)
  • Shirt with sleeves (no tank tops); T-shirts are fine

We recommend if you plan on staying for the whole day to bring plenty of water. Saturdays, we do have a half-hour lunch break, and we recommend bringing a snack or sack lunch.

If you are completing required volunteer hours for school or club credit, we are happy to sign your paperwork.

If you have any questions, please call our office at (818) 767 – 6373.

If you want to help AWH, but are more interested in volunteering with office stuff, such as filing, sorting, alphabetizing, grant researching, etc. please call the Office at (818) 767 – 6373 to discuss possibilities and times.

We hope to see you soon!!! THANK YOU!!!
